The Lemon Drop: A Definitive Crowd Pleaser (+ Recipe)
This underrated shot is sure to hit the spot!
I'm about to (re)introduce you to a shot (or cocktail, if that's more your style) that will have you in its grip from the first sip. The refreshing and boozy Lemon Drop shot gives you an explosive burst of flavor — perfect to rev up any party.
This shot delivers deliciousness while efficiently giving you that pleasant warmth. And the cherry on top? It's a breeze to whip up, perfect for those lively gatherings where everyone wants a taste.
Grab your ingredients: fresh, zesty lemon juice takes center stage, accompanied by simple syrup and vodka. That's all it takes—just three simple components that come together to create a unique flavor sensation.
What I love about this shot is that while it's simple, it doesn't compromise on taste. A few months ago, I whipped up a batch for a little gathering and gave each guest a shot as they entered. It was such a fun way to welcome everyone!
So where did the Lemon Drop come from?
During the free-spirited 1970s in San Francisco, a refreshing concoction emerged: The Lemon Drop. Sources vary, but the popular belief is that its creator was Norman Jay Hobday, a resourceful Vietnam veteran turned bar owner (Henry Africa's). He crafted this delightful drink to attract single women to his bar with delicious dessert drinks like the Mudslide, Harvey Wallbanger, Lemon Drop, and more. This tactic drew women to the bar, and naturally, the men followed!
Hobday also pioneered the concept of the fern bar—a unique blend of lush greenery and elegant Tiffany lamps.
The Lemon Drop quickly captured hearts and taste buds, becoming an instant sensation. For over two decades, this blend of vodka, citrus, and sugar reigned supreme on cocktail menus all over the world. It became a signature drink that enchanted an entire generation of bar-goers with its boozy allure and tangy-sweet flavors.
Today, like all good things from the bygone eras, the Lemon Drop has made a comeback (like butterfly clips, bellbottom pants, girl and boy bands, and more).
To be honest, I'd all but forgotten about this concoction until it appeared on the Netflix show Warrior Nun (I'm a huge fan!). It sparked a renewed curiosity, and I was soon itching to make my own.
So let's get into it.
The Lemon Drop Shot Recipe
The beauty of this drink lies in its versatility, allowing you to tailor it to your exact preferences. Whether you crave a bold and potent concoction or a sweeter, more tangy experience, the choice is yours. This drink is all about customization, so every sip is perfectly suited to your palate alone. Personally, I find that equal parts strike the ideal balance.
You'll need equal parts of the following:
Vodka
Fresh lemon juice
Simple syrup (a 1: 1 ratio of sugar and water)
Plus
Ice
Lemon wedge (garnish)
A little sugar for the glass rim
All you have to do is:
Place the sugar on a sauce. Then, using the lemon wedge (or a little of the juice), coat the shot glass rim and dip it into the sugar. Set aside.
Grab a cocktail shaker and add vodka, lemon juice, simple syrup, and ice. Shake well for 10-15 seconds.
Strain the mixture into your shot glass.
Garnish with the lemon wedge and serve. Bottom's up!
Indulge in this shot all by yourself or share the experience with friends. Either way, you're in for a treat!

I was just curious, is the taste of a Lemon Drop very much different from a Mojito?
